TheForce.net recently spoke to a LucasArts representative who spoke about the much wished-for PC version of The Force Unleashed. They did not respond very positively.
“It definitely will not be coming to PC.”
Many fans will probably be very disgruntled over this. The question was asked because HMV.co.uk had listed a PC version of the game on their site.

Look at gears of war, console gamers love that thing, they did a pc port, and it sucks, I beat the whole thing in like six hours(the pc version has more content to boot), there is no replay value, I can go left instead of right, no thanks…

If PC gaming is so crap and going the way of arcades. Then how do you explain Crysis? A game that is so powerful that is cannot be played on a Xbox or PS3 because of the complete lack of power in the consoles. If this game can exist on the Wii which is less than the power of the average PC on the market today, then they have little to no excuse for it not to be on the PC.
You all forget you cannot design and build a game on a console its all created on a PC which proves that EVERY game made can be played on a PC. Its just a simple economics game, they know they can make far more money releasing it on a console where the games on average are £10-20 more expensive than on a PC its as simple as that. Lucasarts are finnaly stabbing all those pc gamers in the backs after supporting them from day one playing Monkey Island, Epic, Grim Fandango, Tie Fighter, X-wing, Dark Forces, Jedi Knight and many more. I own a Wii so if I want I wont miss out on this game but I will not be buying it because I refuse to pay more for a console game when my PC has atleast 4 times the processing power of the PS3.

Well what to say about this…? LA are just in it for the money, they don’t care about the fan base, they just want to make as much money as they can by selling it to kiddies ( let’s face it, they own the consoles, more grown up people own pc’s ) who will be like “but muuuuuum I want it! *tantrum*” rather than making a game work on a real gaming machine. Let’s face it, if they can put it on the xbox(epicfail)360 then there’s no reason it couldn’t be on the pc as well. I have to say this is pretty LAME and as pathetic as an excuse can get.
Let us examine a few things:
First off, not too many gaming enthusiasts spend $4000 on a gaming rig. Very few people with money to blow spend that much on a Dell or Alienware rig. Even so, those rigs are SO powerful (8-Core, 4+ GB RAM, Dual/Tri SLI) that ForceUnleashed would never even COME CLOSE to using all that power. Besides, NONE of the current consoles come anywhere NEAR that kind of power. So that point is mute since the game cant even take advantage of that type of rig.
Second. Most of your PC gaming market (ESPECIALLY for Star Wars) will build their own rig for less than $1700. My 2 year old dual-core (4GB RAM and 8900 GTS) can be put together now for less than $800 and STILL blows my PS3 out of the water in terms of computing and graphics power. There is no doubt that rig would be able to handle DMM and Euphoria with more than enough power left over to run the game full HD 1080p with HDR and AA/AS filtering. Things that no current console can do to the same effect. So don’t say someone would need to spend $4000 on a computer to play ForceUnleashed as intended, its an insult.
This line of explanation is A) WAY of base in pricing, and B) essentially PUNISHING all PC gamers who DID invest in a good gaming rig. NOT COOL.
Why is LA even concerned about outdated computer rigs? Do they care about outdated consoles like NES or PS1? They could essentially just say “Hey, we are not going to release the game at all because some people don’t have the latest consoles”
Now, never mind the price, let us take a look at the concern of playing the game “watered down.” This excuse is just as lackluster as the first. The strange thing here is that … wait… the game will also be released on PSP and PS2 as well…. hmmm, do these systems have the same capabilities as the Wii, xBox and PS3? Last I checked, not at all.
So is LucasArts saying that the gaming experience on the PS2 or PSP will be the same as on the PS3?
I am confused, because we want everyone to have the same experience right.

If so it means either: A) The game does not really consume the resources of a “$4000” PC, or B) You really DON’T care that everyone has the same experience and this is really about something else, like back-room deals with console manufactures, or an real inability to develop for PC multi-core systems with advanced GPUs. Either way the whole “reason” is more of an excuse and insult.
So I was going to have to settle on playing ForceUnleashed on my PS3. But now I cannot even get equivalent gaming experiences between the consoles. Each console will have different options, playing styles, bonus levels and now… only the Wii will get multiplayer! Are you kidding me? At least in the article you did bother insulting us with a lame reason.
I have to say this is another notch in a LOOOOOOOOOOONG line of gaming disappointments from LucasArts.
Thanks for killing off the excitement of a highly anticipated game. Considering the scope of the CANNON, I really thought you guys would give it the magic touch and love for all Star Wars fans. Guess not.

I am dissipointed that the Forced Unleashed is not coming to the PC. I have bought every single Lucasarts fps since I bought Dark Forces many years ago. I build computers for myself needed for simulation(work) which also get used to play games. I have a Wii but would rather enjoy the high end graphics which can only be experience on a PC, and probably ps3.

Upcoming next-gen game from LucasArts to ship for PC in 2008
SAN FRANCISCO, CA. — April 1, 2007 — Originally planned to be solely released for consoles and handheld platforms, the upcoming next-gen game being developed in-house by LucasArts, The Force Unleashed, has been confirmed by LucasArts to be released on PC shortly after its console version release in Q2 of 2008. This unexpected move has been reportedly due to extreme fan demand for a PC version.
“Originally the game was only going to be developed [by LucasArts] for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. But after enormous cry for a PC version, we have decided to begin development on the PC version of Force Unleashed,” said LucasArts President Jim Ward. When asked about euphoria and Digital Molecular Matter (DMM) being implemented on the PC, he responded, “While I don’t know all the technical specifications, it is my understanding that both euphoria and DMM will be able to run smoothly on the PC by 2008.”
“The game will be nearly identical on the PC to its console counterparts,” Ward reassured. “All PC games have their differences such as controls and this one is no different.”
The game will be shown at the Electronic Entertainment Exposition (E3) July 11-13, 2007, in Santa Monica, California.

LucasArts think they can just neglect us like that. Well, essentially they can, but the fact is, they probably signed a deal with MS, Sony and Nintento so that their consoles get the game 1st and in return they get say 5% of the profit of selling the consoles and equipment. So they both get a profit and some noob PC gamers will probably go and buy a console, bringing them even more money. And then they release a port of the PS2 version so we can’t say it didn’t come out and so we can’t use TFU as an argument when it comes to not releasing for the PC some other game like Indiana Jones or something later. I honestly thought that this was going to make it to the PC eventually, and maybe it will, when everything now new gets outdated, especially after seeing GTA 4 get announced for the PC. And now, after two years of playing Jedi Academy and a bit of Battlefront II I may leave the Star Wars franchise just because of this and turn to GTA. And even in other games LA seems to be neglecting the PC. Like with Lego Star Wars. The Complete Saga, being a console only game, includes new characters, new features and new everything while the content never got released for the PC. Or the rumored-about Battlefront III which was said to get released only for the next-gen consoles, even though the series actually started on the PC.
The PC has the power and the technology of all consoles (except maybe the Wii), with better graphics (Can you even TRY to explain Crysis, Lucas? I thought not.) and a far better control system. How can 12 buttons on a gamepad possibly replicate the controls that a mouse and 100+ keys on the keyboard. In order to do so, the gamepad would need at least 4 new buttons and everybody would need one more thumb to control them. So how can any console FPS or action game deliver the same or better experience than the PC? Not to mention that PCs can be upgraded and deliver a better experience every time, whereas consoles always look the same. Also, home consoles require the TV, and can be a real pain in the a** if more than one person are supposed to be using it.
PCs rock! Consoles will never be able to do anything near anything that PCs can. Ever surfed on an Xbox? Ever written an essay on a Wii? Ever wrote a program on a PS3? Not likely, because consloes are only used for gaming. PCs are much more. And besides, the PC would be able to, can, and HAS run TFU. It was developed on a PC because consoles are too stupid even to edit a text file. So it can be run on a PC but LA is too selfish to release it. But we’ll be laughing when they realise they lost 2M fans with this.

We love lucas arts. I’ve never played a bad starwars game, and I could name dozens of them. This is money grabbing from the console crowd, and good on them! Look at all the platforms they have made it for! I will buy the PSP version and play it while i’m taking a dump and fantasising about the PC version.
Don’t worry! It will come to PC when they are good and ready. Don’t put pressure on. We don’t want a deadline that forces an incomplete game to be released.
As an example every GTA so far has had a PC version, but remember how long san andreas took to make it to PC after the PS2 version? It takes a while to come out after the console versions, because it needs to be enhanced!!!! More content, changed controls, Better graphics! Lose the console feel. Everyone knows that console games are pirated as well, but it is much easier, accessible, and relevant on PCs. The fact is, if they release it on PC (at least right away) most people who would have purchased it on a console would have just downloaded the PC version instead. They say that it isn’t coming to the PC, but let’s face it, in video games when they say won’t they usually mean not in the very near future. I’m sure eventually it will be on PC, after console sales dwindle and no one is buying it anymore. And for all of you complaining…shut up, buy a console, it doesn’t matter how good a deal you got on parts, unless you bought them from a complete idiot with no sense of value, if a console is more expensive then your PC, your PC won’t run the game well anyway. A 360 is down to $199, get your ass out of Burger King, get an IQ, get a decent job and you will earn that in 2-3 weeks. Not that difficult.

An interesting collection of viewpoints pertaining to this matter… I think Lucas Arts will miss out on some good profit by not serving the PC crowd, myself included. That being said, you must take into account the massive amount of resources it takes to make a game of this caliber, thus it may not be worth it to them to release on PC. I highly doubt they have deals with Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo limiting them from releasing on the PC as most PCs run Microsoft Windows. Microsoft knows that there is a very limited market for enthusiasts who are on the fringe of buying an XBox 360 and they also know that one game is highly unlikely to turn a large percentage of people. Definitely does not sound like their tactics.
Point being, I would really love to see this game on the PC as i’ve spent quite a bit of time and money building and maintaining an ultimate gaming rig for precisely this reason: badass upcoming games. I have never really enjoyed games on a console system mainly due to the controllers. I find a mouse and keyboard offer a far superior precision of control for many different aspects of games. Yes, I realize you can plug a mouse and keyboard into an XBox 360 or Playstation 3, but the customization of controls and the entire setup in general is lacking. Never the less, there are some titles coming for the PC (Diablo 3, Starcraft 2) that will make me forget about the Force Unleashed, but I would really like to play it! It looks like an amazing platform what with the manipulation and interaction between the three physics and materials engines. If they use it like Half-life 2 used the Havok engine, it will be a great success!
I really wish those at Lucas Arts the best and hope they can give me some enjoyment by releasing this exciting game on the PC. That being said, I also would like to thank them for the numerous titles, Star Wars and otherwise, that they have released over the years. I have enjoyed them all and would indeed like to continue!
Also, a note to the Pirate. My PC is far superior to any console in terms of technology, and I do mean FAR as in VASTLY superior. I work hard so I play hard and it is my opinion that if you have the money, a gaming PC is above and beyond consoles. I like the idea of consoles allowing people who do not make so much money play as well, however they have yet to produce a console that can play with PC and other console players over the internet in the same game. It’s rather dumb because the net coding is the exact same in each game regardless of platform changes. I would really like to see a unification in the area of PC/console internet play. Also, saving up 2 grand for a badass gaming rig is not impossible if you set some goals for yourself… in fact it’s quite easy.
Trust me, I have a badass computer too. I love PC gaming, and I respect anyone who works hard and earns the money to build a decent PC. I’m merely saying that if people want to play Force Unleashed so bad, then they have to buy a console. Or at least they do right now. And a side-note to Dynamic Variabl3, there are many windows live PC games that can cross play with the Xbox 360, several games actually have an achievement to play either on 360 with a PC gamer, or on a PC with a 360 gamer.
And I never said PCs weren’t superior, I said that a PC that costs less than a console($199 for a 360 now) would not be able to play force unleashed anywhere near as good as the console would.

Well I’m a coder and I’ve always been a die-hard PC gamer, although I have most of the consoles too I hardly play them. Look in the shops and the PC gaming section shrinks every month – if they have one anymore.
Piracy doesn’t kill the industry, but that’s the excuse I’m hearing from coders and the main reason that the games companies always just say that they’ll put the PC version on the back bumper for a while, after the console versions are released then they can concentrate on improving resolutions etc for the PC.
Console versions are limited and much faster to develop, it is lazy and the companies always blame it on PC piracy.

Lucas will find that the game will come to pc whether they like it or not. Its coming out for PS2, which is already emulated. Also, just a matter of time before PS3 emulator hits the mainstream.

As far as PC Piracy, LA will get more money than its losing. If 100,000 copies of it are sold to PC, thats 100,000 more copies sold. It costs about 39 cents for them to put the game on a disc to begine with. Its more of a block of people getting it for free rather than not wanting to take away their profits.
Lucas Arts will pay for this. Ultimately PC gaming will win. Consoles are nothing but expensive underpowered toys pushed by corporate greed and played by idiots.

Like you said they will sell 100,000 copies, but if they can empty out 500,000 copies of the game on consoles and 100,000 on PC by putting to console first they will. If they put it direct to PC, then 25% of the 500,000 who bought console versions would D/L it instead of purchase it then the 100,000 that would buy the PC version, of course would still purchase it. And those who say they are lazy for blaming piracy are complete idiots. They blame piracy because it does kill a lot of sales. Yes there will always be pirates, but if half of those pirates are hard-core star wars(or whatever for that matter) and want to play it right away they will buy it for the console, while others will wait and pirate it. This is a system for getting as much $$ as possible. and yes LA was a predominantly PC game based company, but like every company in the world they want as much $$ as possible. So they will change and act just like all the evil companies in the world(EA) and make the $$.

Console games are more expensive to make now and they have the same market as they had 5 years ago, so they sell the same amount now as they did then… if this keeps up, surely the console market will eventually die.

Console piracy is rife, Force unleashed was availiable 3 days before launch on many torrent sites and copies available for every platform the game was realesed on. I don’t understand this need by console gamers or companys to predict death to PC gaming. Which is laughable, considering PC gaming was worth 10.7 billion in 2007, also twat companys like LA count store sales and ignore online sales which is where most PC gamers buy their games. As a PC gammer this does annoy me massively. I’ve spent a good grand on tihs PC system. Sure mostly it’s for work, I do a lot of CGI and game development work, so I need the power. But the point is, I own a gaming machine, that looks twice as good graphically, as the XBOX 360 or PS3 allows. The new Direct X 10 technologies Vista deploys, combined with a nVidia 280 1Gb graphics card, see to that easily.
Games consoles are just for those fools who can’t use a mouse.
With the exception of the wii, they got it right, a fun controller system, with fun games. Who gives a damn about the graphics when you’re just having fun anyway?
But if you’re playing the graphics game, a decent PC will win out. LucasArts are just denying themselves an extra market.
Hell, where were all the consoles when we where helping BUILD lucas arts by playing X-Wing, Tie-Fighter, X-Wing vs Tie Fighter, X-Wing Alliance, Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, the list goes on. It’s a betrayal of the foundation that built lucas arts. Where would by be without the PC? Monkey Island, Sam and Max, Full throttle, Digg. If it wasn’t for us PC users buying those games in the first place Lucas arts would have just stuck to making films.

Lucasarts, u just lost many players and many money on this, as PS3 will come, aswell will there be other games as world of warcraft, starcraft and diablo 3 covering ur asses, so if u know whats good and right just make the damn game to pc and end this madness. !
Everyone seems to have forgotten the George Lucas is a whore…. looks what him and Spielburg did to Indiana Jones ffs, ofc he’s made a deal with the console industry it’s what he does because he loves one thing, money. Until that b*****d is dead LA will carry on being bothered about profit, not decent games and a fair deal for all gamers. At the end of the day the only reason piracy is meant to be ‘harder’ on consoles is because it requires a bit of extra money to pay for the modding, tbh this is pretty stupid seeming as spending $100 to buy a mod chip is made back once you’ve downloaded three games….
Lucas Arts has gone to the dark side along with Microsoft, the record industry and the M.P.A.A. They’re all money grabbing and I’m looking forward to seeing how many of them go bust in this economic downturn (hey we might see them actually admitting that people are pirating more because they’re releasing crapper and crapper products). Anyway that’s my rant over, I’m gonna download the game IF it ever comes out for PC cos I’m not giving George “I’m a whore” Lucas any more of my hard earned money. Peace.

You all can’t see this is a commercial move!! And not just to gain on the games, but also on the consoles!! All the major companies have money deals together, LA, Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo (all mentioned before)… for now they’re all in one block, so for example LA won’t release TFU for PC just because in this way it “forces” you to buy or Microsoft’s xBox360, or Sony’s PS3, PSP, or Nintendo’s Wii, or any other console if you want to play the game! Open your eyes, nothing happens for a case!!

I am a self-described brilliant hacker and am currently transforming the game to PC on my own and for my own use. I did it with call of duty 3 but that was a waste of time. It takes about a year but it is possible if you know how to do it.
I also converted some Wildgames to PS2.

People told me it was impossible with my other endeavors but they were completed.
Lucasarts was full of it with thier excuse. First off it does not cost no $4,000 for a decent pc unless your crazy and have the money. I have a PC that cost no more than $900 (over time) and it plays Crysis (a game not on cosole cause they are too weak to HANDLE it .. wait.. that is the same EXCUSE they used! Irony?) with an average FPS of 58 (all on High res of 1920×1080), also that is with no overclocking. Another thing… my current PC will last a long time, long into another NEXT-GEN console. Did they not consider Nvidia PhysX? That could handle all that new tech they could put into it… I think they are just lazy and cause they made plenty of money from all the consoles they put it on… so why would they ever port it over? They have their money right? lol
I personally think it’s just yet another one Digital Rights Management incident. Everyone knows that console vendors make an effort to make pirating harder while PC’s have generic parts so this is unfeasible. Imo time to cut the crap and the excuses and tell what’s actually making many game companies think twice before targeting PC.

If they are worried about piracy why don’t they come up with something like steam that valve used for half life. it was shitty to start with but its not so bad anymore. Valve sells lots of games now. (not just valve games etc.) They should at least consider releasing it later on down the track via something like steam. I don’t mind playing older games long as they are good. Better than not being able to play it at all
